This drink was used for spiritual and religious purposes by ancient Amazonian tribes and is still used as a sacred beverage by some religious communities in Brazil and North America, including the Santo Daime.

Traditionally, a shaman or curandero — an experienced healer who leads Ayahuasca ceremonies — prepares the brew by boiling torn leaves of the Psychotria viridis shrub and stalks of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine in water.

The Banisteriopsis caapi vine is cleaned and smashed before being boiled to increase the extraction of its medicinal compounds.

When the brew has reduced to the shaman’s liking, the water is removed and reserved, leaving behind the plant material. This process is repeated until a highly concentrated liquid is produced. Once cooled, the brew is strained to remove impurities.

Blended and cooked slowly, this brew is used by locals to enter a deep trance that is said to heal the body and unlock the subconscious mind. Guided by shamans, a person enters the eye of the needle and must face his own truths and deepest fears.

Daniel LeMunyan is a NYC based motion graphics artist,  illustrator, and independent film maker. His unique approach to storytelling is identifiable by his natural inclination to explore the depths of the human character and the composition of living and inanimate objects. Whether by video, illustration, music or digital animation, Daniel’s signature style brings viewers through a journey of discovery, and unpredictability.

A visually striking exploration into the Peruvian Amazon and further into the depths of human consciousness. For thousands of years, the Ayahuasca brew has been used by indigenous tribes as a medicine, a therapy and a gateway beyond this world. The active ingredient is DMT (Dimethyltryptamine), which induces intense, occasionally nightmarish hallucinations lasting for up to 12 hours.

Guided by shamans, a person enters the eye of the needle – and faces visions of absolute truth, his demons, his fear, his loved ones – to emerge enlightened and reborn.
